Its not the same strain ... but both came from birds (that is why its called "avian flu"). I understand it is common for the flu virus to start in birds or other animals and then jump to man.

Leak Investigation nytimes.com EXCERPT: Mr. Fitzgerald's conversations with lawyers since late last week have left an ominous cloud hanging over the inquiry, sweeping away assurances from a number of officials and their lawyers that Mr. Fitzgerald was unlikely to find criminal wrongdoing. In coming days, Mr. Fitzgerald is likely to request that several White House officials return to the grand jury to testify about their actions in the case - appearances that are believed to be decisive as the prosecutor proceeds toward a decision on whether to file charges. Mr. Fitzgerald is also re-examining grand jury testimony by I. Lewis Libby, the vice president's chief of staff, the lawyers said, but it is unknown whether he too has been asked to appear again before the grand jury. His lawyer, Joseph Tate, did not respond to telephone messages left at his office today.

Hi Karen, re: <<I don't think the avian flu is the same. I just don't buy it..>> I don't either. There is so much fear-mongering going on all the time, I don't know what to believe. The connection between the 1918 flu and this new "avian flu" seemed to pop up about time Bush was talking about using the military to quarantine us. IMO, the Bush gang just wants the American people to be so damn scared they will go for anything, unfortunately. Just like today, as the noose was tightening around Rove, etal, the NY subway scare comes on to steal a lot of attention.. I have NEVER seen such times.. Helluva lot worse than the Nixon era, imo.. :( m
