Your nephew was on to something. It's not our absolute station in life that determines our satisfaction, it's our relative station in life. Have you ever read the book "King Rat?" That says it all.

I believe that contented people living in fishing villages all around the world would not be nearly as content if their neighbors were living in the lap of luxury. They'd still have good lives but the human animal is compelled to compete. Ed
