"But you see, I have never seen the kind of things you describe above.....including lynchings. "

Nor have I. They preceded me by a few years. Even in their hey day, they didn't happen all that often in a given area. But they did happen.

I am not saying the US is race neutral, far from it. But to claim that things haven't changed isn't anywhere close to being true. Do blacks, especially male blacks, have stereotypes to overcome? Sure they do. We've seen that on this thread, look at the claims with respect to crime. Now there is a certain amount of truth to it, but it isn't all that much higher than other components of society, especially when you norm for economic standing. So there is a persistent stereotype concerning black males and crime.

But blacks aren't expected to sit in the back of the bus and to make themselves as invisible as possible any more. If they do come to the attention of whites, they aren't expected to be as subservient as possible or risk, at a minimum, a dressing down if not out right assault.

Could things be better? Sure they could. But they aren't at the point that cripples the ability of blacks to improve their lives like it used to. In my neighborhood you can see blacks, whites and hispanics hanging out and talking with each other. That wouldn't have been the case 40 or 50 years ago.
