"But you have to wonder how deep that progress runs if a white person is thinking nigger when talking to a black person."

Such things take time. It takes less time if they interact with each other, but you can't force that. That backfires. A typical stereotype in the South has always been somebody starting out "all niggers are lazy and shiftless, except for ol' Jim Bob who is the salt of the earth". And that was always because that person knew ol' Jim Bob and was treating the rest as stereotypes. Ideally, stereotypes should be the exclusive province of jokes and TV shows. Sadly, they are not.

We've come a long way in a pretty short period of time. Like all things, it isn't a straight line, nor is it even across the country. But we are getting there as long as there isn't something that causes some major back sliding. Of course, by the time we get there fully socially, it may be that everybody is so interbred that finding distinct races would be a chore.

I'm with Elvis Costello on this - "You don't have to be black to be a nigger no more." So, in that sense, we've made progress. A "nigger" is defined by economics, not race. I'm sure there are many laggards, but they too shall pass.
