Re: "Bush is certainly no conservative"

Although I dislike the imprecision of labels... one traditional fault line among American 'conservatives' has been between 'Fiscal conservatives' (sometimes called 'Wall Street conservatives') and 'Social conservatives' (sometimes called 'Main Street conservatives').

Frequently their goals, and the policies they support, are very much different.

The two most unfortunate aspects of the 'Social conservative's' actions, IMO, seem to be their bent toward the rejection of modern scientific advancements (towards behaving as Luddites, anti science, anti progress), and their enabling of an ever-bigger and more Authoritarian government... Whereas, I'm convinced that the goals of the 'Fiscal conservatives' are very much a good for society.

(I believe a very important THIRD defining label is the political axis that runs from 'Libertarian' beliefs to 'Authoritarian' beliefs, which is also a major fault line. Libertarians are believers in small government and individual liberties... while Authoritarians always seem to support INCREASING the powers --- and thus, the *size* --- of central governments. Since 'Social conservatives' often want to REGULATE the private behaviors of citizens, impose bans and restrictions, they mostly fall into the 'Authoritarian' camp... because they require a bigger, more powerful government to effect their social goals of regulating behaviors.)

In this respect, strangely enough, they often paradoxically effect many of the same structural changes on government as their avowed 'enemies' the 'Social liberals' do! Although the Social liberals and the Social conservatives very much differ on what kind of a society they'd like to bring about, they BOTH require a BIGGER, more POWERFUL and CONTROLLING central government to achieve their aims.

I believe it's fairly obvious that Bush II ain't much of a 'Fiscal conservative' (to put it MILDLY), but he does appear to be much in the 'Social conservative' camp... and, IMO, he is most strongly in the Big Government Authoritarian camp... which is *most unfortunate*.

Re: "...The few gentlemen and ladies on this thread keep throwing out names and insults (why is it, by the way, that the Christian conservatives on this thread use the most invective and namecalling?)"

I guess some people thrive more on hate then on reason.
