"Paul found that the most religious democracies showed substantially higher degrees of social dysfunction." True, there is a correlation. But correlation isn't causality. It is almost certain that the social disfunction and the degree of religious belief have the same root cause. People under stress tend to look for solace, which religion provides. But they also are more likely to engage in the behaviours described.
