Your chemist source was incorrect - there is no way Memantine can be a metabolite of Amantadine. [They are closely related however - Amantadine is a salt of 1-aminoadamantane while Memantine is a salt of 1,3-dimethyl-5-aminoadamantane.]

This link indicates that Amantadine is primarily excreted unchanged with 8 metabolites for the remainder. The N-acetylated derivative accounted for 5-15% of the Amantadine.
