Because in 1864 Congress passed a law to have the words added to the coinage. They were urged to do so my a minister.

Since the Congress passed a law with respect to religion, they passed an unconstitutional law.

No one seemed to mind, after all most people believe in a supreme being, Buddha, Mohammed, Jesus or your God. The only group it offended was the atheists. And since there aren't many of them, they don't represent a voting block. More over the folks that do believe in a deity far outnumber those that don't...and Congress knows the first rule of being in public service is re-election.

But heck, Congress doesn't have to follow the constitution that closely...it's only a guide...you know like, "only Congress shall have the power to declare war" and other such constitutional slip ups, like the legislation they pass which gets subsequently struck down by the courts.

Look if an insurance salesman and a bug exterminator can get to be congressmen, then you really can't expect them to follow the rules all the time...now can ya?
