There were some articles posted here earlier about psychology and the predilection to be conservative or liberal, interesting stuff.

I agree that many people choose partisan views because it lets them be personally self-righteous, much like some (though far from all) religious people.

Turning politics into a "bad guy" hunt is a recipe for that kind of blind, self-promoting partisanship. Unfortunately, we do not have a purely centrist party in the US. Many non-Americans believe we actually have two moderate parties with slight differences and no true conservatives or socialists to offer variety. But that's another subject.

Apart from voting for a tiny fringe group like the Libertarian party or the American Socialist Workers party (I think that is the name), we have to vote for Republicans or Democrats here most of the time. The question is, are the parties headed by exclusionary ideologues or inclusive moderates?

That changes from year to year and election to election. Presumably a majority here would like to see more inclusive 2008 presidential nominees rather than hardcore partisans.

We had some engagement when the thread first started - a series of rightwingers who hate anything to their left and personally abuse anyone who doesn't toe their line, and another series of "impeach Bush now!" crusaders who accused us of supporting a corrupt, evil fascist conspiracy in the White House because we wouldn't let the thread become a one-sided partisan bashing forum.

I don't need that engagement. It's dull, stupid and boring. It's also readily available on many other threads all over SI - hundreds of thousands of posts of moronic, self-serving drivel. It's easy to find if you look.
