McCain's most obvious problem is that he is a Democrat. He is in the wrong party to win the nomination. If he looked like he were going to win the Republican nomination, a credible conservative third party candidate would likely crop up and split the vote.

I think you've got it backwards --- to WIN the nomination he'll need to signal his intentions, or outright 'partner-up' with someone.

A Powell, or practically any Southern politician he'd care to name would probably do it.
