He would be a good one. I suspect the next President is presently relatively unknown, just as Carter and Clinton was.

With the crowded lineup expected in the primaries, and all the elbowing, (I expect a dozen or so early candidates in each party's field)... I doubt such an 'unknown' (nationally, anyway) will catch fire on the Republican side.

On the Dem side though, there will be a strong desire to quickly unite behind an 'anti-Hillary' choice, so I think the Dem field will narrow more quickly, while the Rep minor candidates will fight on longer (hope springs eternal :), giving an advantage to the well-known and nationally vetted names.
