If a polling outfit uses a consistent method with a consistent margin of error, then I have a lot of faith in different polls over time and what they tell us about the trend.

If Bush dropped from 57 to 43% rather than 51% to 37%, it's a minor difference but irrelevant to the main point. To me, anything less than the 51% of the votes Bush got in 2004 spells trouble.
