Danish Muslims denounce newspaper Wednesday 12 October 2005, 21:36 Makka Time, 18:36 GMT english.aljazeera.net Danish Muslims have strongly condemned one of the country's largest newspapers for publishing drawings of the Prophet Muhammad. A group of 16 Muslim organisations issued a statement on Wednesday demanding that Jyllands-Posten apologise for printing the drawings. "The newspaper has with its action deliberately stepped on Islam's ethical and moral values with the purpose of contempt and ridiculing Muslims' feelings, their holy sites and their religious symbols," the group said. On 30 September, the Jyllands-Posten daily printed 12 drawings by Danish cartoonists who had been asked to illustrate the prophet. Jyllands-Posten, citing the freedom of speech, said it would not apologise for printing the drawings. The paper said that after printing the drawings it received several threats, which have been reported to the police. Nearly 150,000 Muslims live in Denmark, representing 2.8% of the country's 5.4 million residents. Islam bans depictions of Prophet Muhammad.

The police HQ caught fire, another police building was besieged and hostages were taken. Some of the casualties are civilians. All schools were evacuated. Russian federal troops and special forces supported by combat helicopters and armed vehicles engaged the terrorists in clashes during the day. Nalchik regional airport was closed. DEBKAfile’s counter-terror sources report that the Islamist terrorists seized sizeable quantities of weapons in their raids on police stations and armories. Most of the province’s inhabitants are ethnic Circassian Muslims. The unrecorded chapter of the Chechen intelligence war of the 1990s relates how the Circassian community of Jordan, which was the security buttress of the Hashemite throne, was used by US, British and French intelligence as a pipeline into the Chechen breakaway movement for close surveillance of its conflict with Russia.
