He would rather be tared and feathered than back down. She would have to do it. Either "something comes up," or she blows the hearings and withdraws.

He may be smarter than even his supporters think. She will keep her answers similar to Roberts, but she won't be confirmed largely because her opponents will assume much of her philosophy based on her affiliation. The evangelical wing will respect Bush for trying, the Dems will look bigoted and Bush gets a pass on his next candidate.
