Bird Flu might be why the US Dollar is getting stronger. The US has the largest drug and biotech industries. The CDC seems to be pretty competent, and the US Army has biological capability also. It has geographical spread with some low density population areas which will allow some populations to delay contact for weeks, maybe months. Places like Salt Lake City , Phoenix, etc. can limit travel to food and critical supplies, and monitor they few people moving in or out. There is lots of manufacturing capability for air filters, barriers, etc. Many HazMat suits - all that paranoid stuff. The US has the ability to evacuate and move millions of people. It is done every day, and is called the morning commute. >>> Anybody remember the "Swine Flu" scare from the 1970s - the Jerry Ford years ? <<< The US created a response to that threat. Assuming Avian flu doesn't develope human - human transmisson until Spring, the US should be okay. Rest of the world could have issues. ************ Refco may not be a liquidity crisis yet, but it could cause one, so I think many people are trimming positions all over. Expect a Fed central bank operation to push money into the market soon. Even a rumour of Fed action could reverse everybody's position in a matter of minutes.
