Bush is a compassionate conservative. That means he is socially conservative, but spends money like a Democrat. Republicans need to get a grip on this spending orgy.

Mr. Bush ran as an anti-big government "conservative"

I don't recall him declaring that he was anti-big governemt, though he may have. I do recall him declaring that he was a compassionate conservative. Though I don't know what that is, to me conservatism, at least the modern Reagan kind, is compassionate.
