Granted, Republicans have been on a spending binge, but there's no way you could convince me that Democrats would be more thrifty.

If he sees something he does not like in a bill...something tagged on that is pork and wasteful, which bloats the bill or deters from its original intent, he may not have a line item veto but he should have enough arm-twisting authority to let the leaders know he won't sign it unless it is cleaned up.

He has done this several times, but I don't think the problems had much to do with the cost of the bill's.
