Use of interferon-alpha does make you depressed, through a secondary pathway which is not currently well defined. Obvious this could be a problem if you are already emotionally disturbed and likely to take your life. Interferon-alpha also lowers your body temperature resulting in a sub-normal temperature. These symptoms apply to everyone.

Many suspect that this is an evolutionary response which creates a desire to be close to home and safe when your body first senses you are infected with a pathogen.

The other potential symptoms apply to very few people. By prompting NK cells to attack virally infected cells, it can sometimes prompt herpetic outbreaks in people who have chronic herpes infections or certain auto-immune diseases. But your Doctor will know if you have any of this disease which can contra-indicate interferon usage. If he/she does not know if you have these conditions, you should get a different Doctor. In any event, your Doctor may consider a cluster of new herpes sores on your lip small potatoes if you're infected with H5N1 bird flu, and decide to use the interferon-alpha anyway.
