"That is why, I personally prefer a consumption tax over an income tax. At least when one is consuming one is helping another citizen and EACH citizen pays SOMETHING to the extent of his consumption."

Income tax targets people in different ways than consumptions tax. England tried taxing windows. Masons were busy that year bricking up windows in castles all over England. Consumption tax targets stupid people very effectively. Those with the wisdom to save are not taxed as heavily. Income tax target professionals and other high income individuals regardless of their consumption habits.

"Many people, even some here, seem to think that money, like manna, comes from heaven not from our very own pockets."

For nearly half the population, it is not their money. roughly 95% of all income tax is paid by about 50% of tax filers. These people view any government program as an incremental improvement. They do not see how it costs them. They also fail to recognise deficit spending as having a cost to them.

This is why I believe that every American should pay some income tax. Even if it is $5 per year, they might see a cost of government.

At the risk of being repetitious, here is something from earlier in this threaded conversation.

"China may be the next super power; we may be the next Banana Republic."

I would be amazed if 10 people reading your post or this one realize just how prophetic that statement is.
