I really think an honest effort to control discretionary spending would have resonated with a lot of people....but it never got more than lip service, then the actual result (huge increases) seemed insulting....if you are one who believes the Republicans stand for smaller, less intrusive government.

It's true that you can't predict the future with absolute accuracy... all you can do is (in politics, anyway) is look at what has happened in the past when *similiar* power constelations were in play... and there DOES seem to be much more unrestrained spending, higher deficits, and more 'adventurism' when one group or the other holds absolute sway over the levers of power.
