I'm really enjoying the series, Rome, too.

I was prepped for it by reading an autobiography of Cicero a couple of years ago. The series tracks the poitical infighting pretty well.

Better question: why is such a good show doing so badly?

No public interest in sword and sandal shows? Gladiator did great; everything similar has tanked since then.

Do the younger people even know about the Roman Empire today?

You could sure have a lot better time with less regrets in those days

As long as you weren't too vocal in your doubt about the gods. Blasphemy was still a big deal to the pagans. It was a favorite way to get rid of Senators in Roman times. I think that was even a charge against Socrates - doubting the gods.

I spoke to a Hindu lady once about how she worshipped so many gods. She said she prayed and made offerings to a god of this and that for this or that purpose. I asked her what she did if the god didn't work for her. She smiled and told me "to hell with that god then, I try another." :)
