they just can't bite the biggest hand that feeds them

Intel used to play Gateway against Dell.
Gateway sold a system with AMD parts, so Dell got every new design about 3 months before Gateway afer that. There was a rumour that Intel disrupted the bid by Compaq to buy Gateway just so they could continue the threat.

Now Intel would have to promote a competitor a lot more to make a serious threat to Dell, but they do have the resources to try, and Intel is famous for making documentation dissapear for any customer that pisses them off. Notably, AMD released their first set of documentation ever with the Opteron. Previously they just documented their differences with Intel and you needed an x86 book from Intel to know the whole story.

It would seem to me that if 'Dell has the power to turn AMD into a supersize competitor to Intel' would it not be reasonable to assume that profit margins (around 60% for INTC) could significantly come down and this could be a potentially HUGE difference for Dell if spread across the millions of MPU's they buy?
