JohnC, You must have been in a crappy outfit. I was in the 49th Armor Division, which was national guard before they became named by the state, and was a rebuilding of the division that had been cut down during WW2. It was run just like an active military division, with seasoned officers, and non-coms, in charge of the training. No such thing as good ole boy stuff, and none were recruited, but joined to be in a position to defend their country if the need came. Evidently, you were in an outfit that came along a lot later than the one I was in, and it offered haven instead of duty to the boots.
