I meant that it be made acceptable to say it either way. You could also have a version that doesn't mention the flag for those who have issues with idolatry or whatever the flag issue is. The important thing is pledging allegiance to the USA and what it stands for.

Now that I think about it, what in the world are we doing legislating such things in the first place? We don't legislate marriage vows, for example, yet people are just as married no matter what they say just as long is it includes a commitment to marry.

At least most of the children knew the difference

Kids will always point out when the parent or teacher or babysitter did something incorrectly. Maybe some of them cared about the law or about leaving out God and maybe some of them were just articulating a gotcha. In any event, if the kids are being sticklers, they should be told that there's no legal requirement to say it any particular way.
