AMD's Silicon On Insulator (SOI) server chips use about half the power of the chips Dell uses.

AMD's integrated direct-connect memory controller and Hypertransport system interconnects improve reliability and performance while reducing costs.

It all adds up to about a 3 to one advantage.

Dell has given up on the profitable high end server segments (which, for a while, it attempted to compete in with Itanium) but it has since been boxed back into the entry and mid-range segments.
