I dont know if its the same everywhere, but I just applied in September for SS and my 62nd B-day was in Sept. I told the lady I was sorry for not applying earlier, she told me wouldnt have made any difference. The rule is as follows:
You are eligible to receive a SS check the first month AFTER you reach your eligible date, and the FIRST check for that FIRST MONTH comes on your B-day of the next month. Ie I was 62 on 9/23, my period begins 10/1 and I receive my firt check for Oct. on 11/23. After that it will always come the 4th Wednesday of the following month. jdn

it's been 3months since i was following it last couple of years on their web site. wife applied in august birthday sept receives bucks in nov.
3 months is earliest. I called the local office she said best i go in and register vs on line register and two months was plenty of time. It only take about twenty minutes , they update computer and numbers kick out. don't forget to bring your discharge papers as you will get credit for all your service time during years you didn't make the max contribution to soc sec. it may increase your pay.
