When it spread to Indonesia a few weeks ago - Australia, only 100 miles away, began to hold weekend drills for emergency and medical personnel in fighting a pandemic and they poured more money into developing a vaccine against bird flu." The above paragraph is misleading. There has been bird flu noted in Russia, Turkey and Romania, and not Finland to my knowledge but only in birds, not people. However, in Indonesia, the flu has actually gone from birds to people. That's why AU is freaked. Having said that, there have only been 3 deaths from bird flu in Indonesia. Some deaths were misdiagnosed......one guy had pneumonia, not bird flu."What disturbed me and many others was the outbreak in Indonesia quickly involved many people who had simply visited a public zoo, apparently having no actual contact with the animals. Worse still relatives of the sick people, who did not visit the zoo soon became sick as well. Until this happened, Bird Flu was just another minor news item for me." That is BS Amy. There is one person they think may have got it from the zoo and that's not confirmed. The little girl just died. The three that are confirmed in Indonesisa lived in close proximity to birds. The way you get it is through their feathers or excrement.......the wind can pick up the virus and spread it to a human in close proximity; however actual touching makes it more likely. What has authorities worried is that the disease can go from animals to people more easily than say SARS could."Much of the press coverage here does not accurately report these facts correctly, relying on language like - no confirmed human to human transmission has been confirmed. I have no idea what they mean by that. Human to human transmission has obvious happened, I have no idea what Deity has not yet confirmed the obvious facts. I can only assume that they don't trust Indonesian Doctors and health authorities because they look foreign. Australia certainly believes their reports of human-to-human transmission." Its not obvious that human to human transmission has occurred. In fact, to date, there is no evidence the virus has mutated to allow human to human transmission. My cousin is an MD and is in constant contact with the CDC. I do not believe the CDC is lying to him. BTW unlike regular flu, the people most suspectible are not the elderly and children but rather 20 and 30 somethings. Having said that, its important for everyone to get some Tamiflu or Relenza and keep it on hand [please note some are claiming that Relenza is better].timesonline.co.uk ted
