The folks I talk to are becoming concerned that after a while, chip by chip, little bits at a time, the original American culture is being eroded.

Beware of the "false consensus effect" and "either-or thinking."

There is a certain segment of the population that is so paranoid and so polarized that it has lost all grounding. The notion that individual citizens shouldn't be welcome to customize their recitation of the Pledge lest they destroy American culture is not reasonable. I'm not sure it's even sane.

Resentments pile up.

I understand that. And I appreciate the validity of some of the resentments and also that the extremism and polarization occur on both sides. I understand how that can make people feel. Newdow is a jerk, IMO. But feeling resentment is no excuse for going off the deep end.

I can't imagine any rationale for denying this small and reasonable courtesy other than hatred and fear or ossifying authoritarianism. I noticed you didn't offer one.

[ (Who are you referring to, anyhow? Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Robertson, Falwell etc???)

I had in mind the Dobsons types. Sharpton and Jackson I think of as professional blacks, not professional Christians. There are no professional Christians on the left, either the political left or the religious left, I don't think. That would be a contradiction.]

KLP, you said it very well.

It's a drip, drip, drip erosion of the traditional culture and people are aware as they never have been before.

The dislike of the ACLU is growing by leaps and bounds.

I myself didn't realize the ACLU went back to the Scopes trial until I read that article posted by Lindy a day back. They pushed the trial to publicize themselves and gain funds.

That's a 75 plus year war they've been waging against Christianity and traditional values.

There's a growing pushback that's gathering strength. These things move slowly and take decades to develop, so they're hard to see.
