What must have happened before for the government to begin thinking there is a problem that requires their attention? The quickest help will be from the Fed who will drop the rates to zero. Also the great majority of people will be OK. Just 15% who recently bought overpriced RE with little down payments and the cohort of RE speculators will be in trouble. Other people will just lose their housing ATM machine. RE prices will plunge, demand for goods will slump.

So IMO the government will not be "erasing" mortgages.
