It appears there are more and more weekly shows which resemble soap operas these days.

I've noticed that, too. I guess they've cranked up the sex and violence about as much as they can so they have to crank up the aberrant behaviors to get more energy. One thing along those lines I've noticed is that professional people, lawyers, medical people, cops, etc are having more personal problems that cause them to get all emotional and screw up on the job. It used to be that professionals acted professional. I don't like the message in that. If you buy into the scenarios they're showing, it makes it seem OK for NO cops to not show up for work given that our hero on TV drops whatever he's doing in the hospital or earthquake center or wherever to go looking for his brat who had a tantrum and ran off and is at risk. There was a lot of that in 24.

Another part of it, I think, is the trend towards serialized shows, which they use to keep us watching each week, rather than plots that resolve during the hour. I prefer the latter so I can watch them at my leisure.

SG-1 is one of my favorites, as well. I nuts about Monk and CSI.
