The sickest thing about F1 cars IMHO...is the brakes & areo packages. Again I forget the #'s but those bitches can brake from 200mph - 70mph in like 2 seconds pulling negative 3-4G's...INSANE...but way cool!!

if there is anything in this world that would resemble true laissez faire competition, IT IS Formula One...

the result has been to produce the most magnificent machine capable of speeds and turning capabilities no other race car come close (in terms of the complete package, not strictly top speed)...

however... in the name of safety (to slow the cars down)

there are a number of items that have been 'verboten' by the FIA to slow these machines down. amongst the most notables are the 'ground effects' cars, super soft tire compounds, and several 'fins & wings' of extreme proportions...

still... there are some very inventive and imaginative engineers that in spite of continuously changing regulations and efforts by the FIA to slow the machines down, they figure out a way to make them faster....

the newest of these rules are the end of the beautifully sounding V-10 motor.... next year, they are going to no more than v-8... it will take them a while, but no doubt they will come up with some very efficient motors that will be very fast and reliable...

yes, they do spend millions like politicians, but unlike politicians, it is THEIR money (or the sponsor who have agreed to spend it)...

the 2005 season might have seen the last of the privateer teams (minardi, jordan, sauber, which will become, squadra toro rosso, midland F-1, and BMW respectively... all backed by well heeled enterprises *no single individuals*)

and the 2006 season promises even better races than 2005. it will also bring an opportunity for american driver, scott speed to shine in F-1 as he has been signed by the red bull racing team. red bull bought out the former Jaguar F-1 team and has recently announced they bought the Minardi team as well.... (to be completed by Nov 1)

actually.... the entire story of red bull and the success it has enjoyed is quite interesting.... Austrian Dietrich Mateschitz, its founder and master mind (along with thai businessman Chaleo Yoovidhya) story can be read here....

edition.cnn.com

it will be very interensting to see how they develop these two teams, which might prove that after all $$$$ -while important- is not EVERYTHING in Formula One...

their performance this year may be an early sign of what is to come next year with two teams.... which certainly was a big improvement from the jaguar charade and failure... credit must be given to Christian Horner who used to run his own team in the formula 3000 (the craddle of many future F-1 stars)

more about red bull racing in their website....

what i like best about f-1 is that it is the absolute best of the best in terms of drivers, motor sports and auto engineering... but it is an acquired taste...

no door banging, metal to metal contact and destruction derby oval racing... with all due respect to the nascar capos, whom i must admit, they have a thing or to to teach the F-1 boyz when it comes to marketing... but as far as driving and competition... i will stay with f-1 for a long time....
