It's hard for me to believe that you missed the identity politics phenomenon. It's not very new. Goes back decades. I seem to recall that you've commented on PCness off and on so you would have to be aware of at least that manifestation of identity politics.

And, yes, I've observed enough of it to believe it is a very real part of the common landscape.

Do you mean as in Dr? Lawyer? Wrestler? Teacher? Nurse? CPA?

I'm unaware of any identy politics surrounding doctors, lawyers, wrestlers, teachers, nurses, CPAs, or any other profession. Identity politics is generally about inherent characteristics or deep cultural traits--like race and religion--and is a reaction to perceived social injustice. I suppose it's possible that some profession might shoehorn itself into that definition but I'm not aware of any active example of it.
