You could be right about the ER2, just exit prior to the margin double and then reposition soon after the open based on the MAX. To be honest, I've not looked at doing that, so it could have merit. What seems to work best for me so far is to catch the start of a momentum move, early in the changing direction of the MA, before the MAX, and enter. Be ready to get whipped, but haven't had that happen too often. Then exit when the MO looks to be waning. Much more an art than science, to be sure. Haven't done anything else today, but would like to get in at least one more before I have to leave.

Have you tried a MAX like setup using IWM?
