It's almost a useless exercise to ponder the road back from hell. Pre-emptive strikes are not needed unless there is ample proof of harm. All we have is ample proof of a president who was predetermined to invade Iraq, using 9-11 as the pretext.

Saddam was a bad man true enough. He became a powerful and horrible leader with the help of Reagan and Bush I. We aided him in the war with Iran...while also helping Iran as well. He learned well how to be an asshole, from the best teachers in the world.

That said, Saddam could have been dealt with in other ways. To go into a discussion of it would not be fruitful or meaning ful to you, for you are already for pre-emptive wars...even when the intelligence is on thin ice.
