Many of the neocons are closely allied with Israel, as Jewish-Americans, and close to the levers of power. I probably don't assign Israel as big a role as you do. Indeed. As far as I'm concerned, I don't even see other "roles" besides Israel's... I view the whole thing as a one-man show with two foils: the "greedy oilman" and the "WMD bugaboo".
