Now Dennis, don't be difficult.

The idea of a gasoline tax is that it is a tax that one can minimize by making wise choices. It also (as applied by the states) is a direct user-tax for maintaining highway systems. We cannot build highways through our own private efforts.

It is a lot harder to avoid income taxes, and it is hardest of all to avoid avoid the evil tax of government-engineered inflation.

The United States has been subsidizing the wasteful habits of millions of people by keeping gasoline as cheap as it has been.
