You're absolutely correct, you are fully protected from a flu pandemic, so long as you wear your tin foil hat to block out the dangerous flu rays.

If you do one day contract the H5N1 flu, simply chant • • •

"I can't be sick because some loon told me its not possible"

• • • repeatedly until you feel better or are dead, which ever comes first.

Tejek, don't believe the media. They haven't a clue. You just need to think. If a person can get the bug from some mucus from a bird, then some mucus from an infected person, will contact exactly the same bug and it can therefore be deposited in another person and passed on.

There's no need to struggle around looking for a reason or method that those people got the infection. The obvious answer is good enough. They caught it from the person they were in contact with. They don't need a humanizing mutation to achieve that. They just need to get a good lump of goop from an infected person.

The bug just needs access to the person's cells and it's away. Some individuals are more resistant than others to the bug in it's current form, which just means it really needs a humanized infection mechanism to make any headway.

In its H5N1 configuration, it can only get passed from human to human in gross infection ways and probably only from person to person with the right DNA/antigens or whatever the bug uses to lock on to somebody.

It needs the humanizing variation to really get moving and catch nearly everyone. Even then, it won't get everyone. Some people will have resistant constitutions and immune systems and the bug will bounce off them.
