Marriage is a private commitment administered by a public authority. The public authority has no right to refuse to do its duty on a discriminatory basis.

100 years ago, the faith was predominantly and only CHristian. Then, the racial makeup of the population was Europeans only. Since then, things have changed. Separation of church and state is still a American value since the founders fled a situation where the state imposed their religion on the people who fled. The situation in this country today mimics the situation in Great Britain 200+ years ago where there was a plurality of religious beliefs in the public but the State wanted to impose just one faith. We here in the US should be smart enough to learn from those mistakes made 200+ years in Europe.
