Size really does have a profound impact on governments.

Switzerland is an excellent example of a democracy.

The city I live in, West Hollywood, with 37,000 residents is a model of a well run city with a surplus of revenue over expense, as is the adjoining city of Beverly Hills with a population of 33,000.

Both are surrounded by the nearly unmanageable mess of the City of Los Angeles with a population of 3.8 million. Residents of Los Angeles see their City Councilman or Mayor on television.

In Beverly Hills or West Hollywood, you see your City Councilman or Mayor at the grocery store, at dinner, or at the gym.

It makes a huge difference in how well things are run.
