A line item veto could put a severe limitation of pork barrel clauses in an otherwise good bill.

It would let the Prez cut out all the other guys' pork while keeping his guys' pork. I suppose you could count that as a glass half full, but there's a cost. He can also cut out some non-pork item that was part of a carefully crafted compromise in the legislature. This distorts the constitutional role of the legislature. It's the legislature that loses business assigned to it by the Constitution. The USSC may be feathering its nest but it's also legitimately protecting the balance of power between the legislature and the WH.
