Hello Maurice,
Absolutely, people who buy tech stocks are supporting R & D and thereby helping humanity in their stock dealings but people who buy gold are doing nothing for humanity thereby. However, one has to look at it long term. Buffett will do far more good for humanity than I or than you even though he stays away from tech stocks, biotech etc. His good will be done by the foundation that he has created. Similarly for Gates and Soros. You and I can never never accomplish anything like that. Some day Tobago Jack will be one of the superrich so his contributions to charity will be 100 times that of the sum of you and I together. Consider for example the case of Andrew Carnegie. His steel mills contributed little or nothing to humanity but his libraries all over the continent of North America were a tremendous contribution to civilization. We have to consider the total picture.
