This technical memorandum lists the deadliest and costliest tropical cyclones in the United States during 1851-2004. The compilation ranks damage, as expressed by monetary losses, in three ways: 1) contemporary estimates; 2) contemporary estimates adjusted by inflation to 2004 dollars; and 3) contemporary estimates adjusted for inflation and the growth of population and personal wealth [Pielke and Landsea, 1998] to 2004. In addition, the most intense (i.e., major1 ) hurricanes to make landfall in the United States during the period are listed. Some additional statistics on United States hurricanes of this and previous centuries, and tropical cyclones in general, are also presented.

I wouldn't be surprised if more storms were reported during the war. There were a lot more Americans around the globe looking and reporting the weather since it affected the war effort.

SANDY BURGLAR ARRESTED FOR STUFFING FOOD DOWN HIS PANTS

Sunday, October 23, 2005
By Dan Blather

(CNN) LEWISTON — Sandy Burglar was caught this afternoon stuffing frozen food down his pants while shopping at the local grocery food chain. He was stopped at the door of the grocery food chain and asked why he was walking out the store without paying. He said he planned to pay for the food, but that he forgot the food was stuffed away down there. While being questioned, Sandy Burglar began to shake nervously, but investigators believed the burglar was only shaking due to the frozen items. Sandy Burglar was then taken to a nearby medical facility for the treatment of frostbite. Some of the frozen food had to be surgically removed from his skin.
