Al-Jaafari, and everybody else, ran on removing US troops. They have to.... it's the only way to get elected.

Now why do you suppose an Iraqi leader would back off such a pledge?

Don't know, what do you think? The US will assassinate him? The US has said they will remove troops if requested by the Iraqi government to do so. Why do you think he "backed off" and it wasn't a big deal in all the news?

Maybe you're distorting his pledge (my guess) to an extreme, when it was perhaps more along the lines of "as soon as our Iraqi troops are able to take over"?
