September’s Equipment in Healthy Territory

Santa Clara, CA, October 19, 2005: With worldwide bookings of $4.6B and billings of $4.5B, the equipment industry posted a B:B ratio of 1.03 in September, according to VLSI Research Inc.

This is no surprise since September is typically a strong month for the equipment industry. Worldwide billings rose almost 14% from August, but remained 13% below those of September 2004. In contrast, the bookings environment is starting to turn around. Not only did bookings grow 9% sequentially, but they’ve finally surpassed the previous year’s level by 19%.

High utilization rates, driven by the seasonal demand surge for chips, are stimulating the growth in equipment bookings. Wafer Fab utilization reached 96% in September, while Test and Assembly were at the 98% level.
