What would you have RATHER Glaspie tell Saddam?

That the US would expend it's blood and treasure to defend Kuwait?

Since that is what US did and would have done, then the answer is ABSOLUTELY YES!

Should we make that guarantee for EVERY country?

If we intend to spend blood and money to counter them, yes. It is a lot better (and cheaper) to make sure everyone knows where we stand and how much we'll pay for something (in this case for Kuwait not being in Saddam's hands) than going to war over it.

BTW, much has been said about April's meeting with Saddam. But not many people know the role US played in convincing Kuwait and UAE to wage economic war against Iraq (that was just as devastating to Iraq as bombs). Which was the reason why Saddam actually wanted to invade Kuwait in the first place. The situation was not so unlike the covert war US was fighting against Japan in support of the British before Pearl Harbour...

Do you care to comment on that?

Why in the world would you have April tell Saddam that the US of A, his sponsor, would not get involved if he invaded Kuwait?

He had tanks on the border and she addressed that. They knew, or should have known, that the ruinous US sponsored war against Iran had depleted the treasury and that Saddam, rightly or wrongly, blamed Kuwait for this, that and the other thing.

The West really needs to get the heck out of meddling in the ME. It meddles badly, creates all kinds of misery and, even after all this time, doesn't understand the region AT ALL.

Whether it was a blunder, or a bizarre misunderstanding of Saddam's intentions, it still points to the main problem of the USA's involvement in the area which is, THE USA'S INVOLVEMENT IN THE AREA.
