OT: Don, take a look at these lists of Toshiba Laptops.

officedepot.com

bestbuy.com

Hopefully what was being advertised is on the list.

I cannot say for sure why the Laptop being advertised was not there for you to buy but it is a common practice in the retail world to advertise what is called a "price leader". That is to say a low priced item that often is not present in the store for sale. This is done in hopes that the buying public will buy another often higher margin product although they can take a "rain check".

Yes demand for Laptops is high so it is entirely possible that the 270 Laptops that were backordered is a high number. But what if this add you read was a nation wide add.

Anyway, hope you get a great machine!

RtS

One quick way to check is to configure a similar machine at the Dell or HP web sites and see if you can order one and at what price. I have several links here home.netcom.com to Dell Small Business as well as Amazon where you can often get deals on HP/Compaq's

I usually shop several online deals and compare them to the BestBuy/OfficeDepot deals.

I like Dell Small Business vs Dell Home because they don't try to give you a free printer to lock you into Dell ink... since most home offices already have a printer and we prefer more memory or a bigger HD in the bundles.

I believe Toshiba makes a great laptop PC, but I'm unsure how expensive they are to fix because I'm not sure where they are assembled.

What key features were you looking for in a "State of the art" machine? I wanted the Pentium M with 128Meg video and a 7200 RPM HD. Have had it now for 22 months and it still meets all my needs... got a duplicate for my girl friend last year except for less video HP... Only thing I might add now: perhaps doubling the memory now would make it a bit faster with my two monitors. Some web sites load this Flash crap which seems to slow it down occasionally...
