"Let's see, if the US didn't need Middle Eastern oil, we could quit giving billions to Israel, billions to Egypt, and we would not need all those bases all over the Middle East, not to mention war in Iraq."

No.

Many reasons to be in the Middle East. Control of oil, so the Europeans can't get it too cheap. Or anybody on the rest of the world.

Cut the supply, raise the price, that rewards the Russians, Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Gulf States.

Open the taps, cut the prices, that helps Asia, and squeezes Hugo Chavez - and Russia and Mexico too.

I cannot see any reason the US would let anyone else control it.

Getting the US to zero Middle Eastern imports, or better yet zero imports, gives the US more flexibility to close the taps more if we want to, so that's useful.
