I don't know why you think we had to kick Saddam around at all. The Gulf War was over. If we had sellers remorse about the terms of the treaty then it was up to the neocons to get over it.

Saddam had destroyed his weapons. He was no model citizen but he was on the path to acceptable dictator.

The animosity that Cheney and the neocon cabal showed toward Iraq was never about weapons or wetlands or women's rights. It was about oil. Saddam had it, and Cheney wanted it. Maybe a million Iraqis have died because of the sanctions and direct bombing because the Vice-Criminal Cheney wanted to enrich himself by taking the Iraqi oil fields.
