<<Hmm. But how would a small investor in the US go about buying either of those stocks? Or even finding charts?>>

Canadian Oil Sands Trust
COS-UN.TO (Yahoo – Quoted in C$)
COS_UN.TO (StockCharts – Quoted in C$)
COSWF.PK (Yahoo – Quoted in USD)
COS (Stock Watch - Quoted in C$)

Oil Sands Split
OST-UN.TO (Yahoo – Quoted in C$)
OST_UN.TO (StockCharts – Quoted in C$)
OSDSF.PK (Yahoo – Quoted in USD)
OST (Stock Watch - Quoted in C$)

You can get real time C$ quotes through Stock Watch. There is a monthly fee and a per quote charge.

You’ll have to ask your broker how to buy them. With Waterhouse I can trade on the TSX, but must have a designated “481” account and do it through a broker. The stated commission is much higher, but I would probably pay as much or more trading through the pink sheets. The MM usually assures that there is a much wider bid/ask spread than the spread on the TSX. I’ve heard that Ameritade has better executions, but don’t know it for fact.

ON Big Charts -

COS

CA:COS.UN

OST

CA:OST.UN

Big Charts will have interday quotes and charts.

On Fidelity, you can buy using the first five letters of the
pink sheets.

so for COS use

COSWF

On Schwab, you make a phone call to the customer service number and ask for the international desk.

Worth the extra effort.

I will refrain from replying, "By employing one's intelligence." I am one small investor who managed rather easily to do these things.

The pink sheet symbols can be found using the Yahoo symbol lookup. All discount brokers (three so far) that I have used have been able to buy these with little difficulty.

The stocks are listed on the Toronto exchange and can be bought directly there using various brokers.

Stocks, charts, symbols, news, and so on can be looked up on TSX.com and Stockhouse.com.

Much more information is available using search engines: Google, Altavista.

And in fact, COS has been repeatedly mentioned in all the major financial newspapers and magazines.
