I don't have a problem with a "machine readable" passport where the photo can be compared with a digital code.

The problem with RFID passports is that they can be read by anyone from 160 feet away with an RFID scanner. There is no legitimate reason for this and many reasons it will make Identity Theft easier.

I doubt that... when airlines started to implement self-checkin, the lines were short. Then they fired clerks, and voila, a year later, they were as long as the old lines because almost everybody had to use them. When supermarkets implement self-checkout, you could in theory save time at first. But then they fired clerks and so more people shifted over to use the self checkout lines and voila, your wait was as long as before.

I predict that initially, you'll see a slight decrease in the time to get through customs; but quickly it will be as sluggish as ever. However, it will be a boon to identity theft professionals who will take it to a new level (after all, they will be manufacturing RFID passport clones now, too).

The solution, besides running all those idiots out of office which, because we're idiots too it won't happen, is to buy a Faraday cage for your passport -- a small mesh, folding sheath would do the trick. Unscannable at any distance. Probably cost about $10 and defeat the other motive of the gov'ts -- surreptitiously to scan your passport wherever you go. But no bother if you hide it from scanning, they'll just scan your shoes/shirt/pants/belt/backpack/banana (you'll swallow the RFID...).
